The Official Guide to Preparing for Hurricane Season

By Public Adjuster

Living in South Florida puts a direct target on property owners, residential and business alike. Hurricane season hits every year, and around summertime, Florida’s rainiest and storm-ridden season. The biggest concern about hurricane season, too, is that it’s a mystery. Despite there being models and storm forecasters, we never truly know which direction these storms will go.

That’s why it’s up to homeowners and business owners to know how to prepare themselves. While the damage hurricanes do is out of property owners’ control, there are preventative actions you can take to minimize damages. Along with that, there are tips and tricks for you to follow that can help you and your loved ones stay safe during hurricane season. And whether you are new to Florida or a long-time resident, a refresher guide from your local public adjuster (https://www.alphapia.com) is always helpful.

Hurricane Shutters and Windows

First things first, every property needs hurricane shutters or windows to ensure maximum protection. No matter how bad the storm looks to be, it’s crucial to prepare like it’s going to be a category 5. The tropical storms and hurricanes change their path and wind speed every hour, proving to be very unpredictable.

With that, Floridians never truly know if the tropical storm or hurricane will cross their path until the last minute. You do not need to put up your shutters as soon as a storm gets spotted in the ocean; however, you should not wait until the last minute. The last thing you want to do is wait, the storm hits, and then you have extensive damage.

Canned Goods, Medicine, and Water

The most critical part of preparation is the protection of your home. However, the next thing you need to do is prepare the inside of the property. Even though you probably have enough food, medicine, and water to get by for some time, you should still take extra measures. You likely will not need to rely on these extra preparation methods. But, if the hurricane is of a high level and wind speed, it can cause severe damages to the area.

For instance, the power can shut off, stores could be closed, and roads could be blocked off for days or weeks. Having additional food, water and medication will be beneficial in this case, as getting to the store may be impossible.

Write Down Important Contact Information

Now that you are stocked up and have protective measures planned, you can move on to writing down contact information. If you cannot charge your phone, having vital phone numbers written down can be a lifesaver.

Some examples of contact information you want handy are family members, your homeowner’s insurance company, and your local public adjusters. All of the above are people you either depend on or will need assistance from in case of property damage.

Create an Emergency Plan

The worst-case scenario during hurricane season is that your property is damaged enough where you need to evacuate. Or, it’s not to that extent, but evacuation is still necessary. When this happens, rest assured that your property will be in good hands with the insurance company and your insurance adjuster after the storm is over.

In the meantime, you need to have an emergency plan in motion. We recommend considering packing a go-bag, planning evacuation for pets and loved ones, and having a meet-up spot just in case you lose anyone. Having a plan in place will not only ease your stress or any anxiety, but it will also help if the worst-case scenario does occur.
